The Marco Island Police Department is investigating a series of vehicle and residential burglaries, as well as vehicle thefts which have occurred on the Island. These incidents have occurred primarily over the last 72 hours. MIPD has been working with the Naples Police Department, Collier County Sheriff’s Office, and the Region Six Fusion Center to prevent and solve these crimes. Nearly every one of the burglaries noted occurred without forced entry – via an unsecured door. Two of the three vehicles taken were stolen after the suspects located keys in the unsecured vehicle.

What can YOU do to help from becoming a victim?
Take It & Lock It: The basic crime fighting method to preventing burglaries. Remove all valuables from your vehicle when you park it. Lock your vehicle. It may only take seconds to break a window, but doing so makes noise – and criminals hate making noise.Call 911 immediately after seeing anything suspicious – IMMEDIATELY!

Roger Raymond, athletic director for the Marco Island Academy, ask Marco Island City Council this week to build bridges to the future for children through athletics. He ask council to continue waiving the fees normally charged for the use of the community’s athletic fields. He said MIA is hard pressed to continue its athletic programs without waiving of the fees. MIA athletics are not funded by the district, as they are in other county schools. Reimplementation of fees for use of fields will drive it further into the red the next school year.

Plantings in some Marco Island medians have been dying at an alarming rate. 70 to 80 percent of the sod and 40 to 50 percent of the shrubs have died. Replacing plantings and reconfiguring medians to a level design to retain water must take place over coming years to save the areas., he said. There are 34 medians on Marco and the cost to rebuild them is about $100,000 per median.. The island beautification board will discuss this further

Collier County Domestic Animal Services (DAS) encourages people to give animals a second chance by adopting a shelter pet. That is what generous donor Lesley Brown Robert did by donating $20,000 to underwrite pet adoptions and to purchase pet supplies for homeless dogs and cats.

With this charitable donation, DAS will be able to help more than 70 dogs and 100 cats get adopted. The adopter will only need to pay the $10 county license fee. Each adoption includes spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, and a microchip. The donation will also help pay for promotional and advertising costs to spread the word about these great pets in search of their forever homes.

When animals arrive at the Collier County animal shelter, the shelter becomes a temporary home. This donation will help dogs and cats have a more comfortable stay while at the shelter. The cats will receive hand-made cat trees to provide a place to climb, play, and nap. The homeless dogs of DAS will receive Kuranda beds, which are indestructible beds that are easy to clean and maintain. The donation will also help pay for behavior enrichment tools and new leashes.

"DAS is so thankful when donors like Lesley Brown Robert show such incredible generosity," said Shelter Operations Manager Dr. Melissa Shyan-Norwalt. "What a gift to the animals and to adopters looking to give them a forever home," Shyan-Norwalt added. This is the second donation from the Robert family. In 2012, a $5,000 donation was made to underwrite the adoption of 50 cats.

For more information about the Adoption/Retention Plan, call Daniel Christenbury, Public Information Specialist at 252-6957.

Council voted 7-0 to award a contract to repair the Smoke House bay bridge and have the city manager finalize negotiations and enter into a 15-year financing plan for the project and bring the plan back to council.

Councilman Amadeo Petricca has taken it upon himself to direct the city attorney to draft pieces of legislation which would create a Code Enforcement magistrate and dissolve the Code Enforcement Board. This required an ordinance to be written and discussed by council first. Council voted not to have the legislation drawn until they could learn more and because the majority wanted council to discuss such things before asking that legislation be written.

(Naples, Fla.) – The Growth Management Division and Board of County Commissioners made huge strides Tuesday in lessening the burden on developers and their customers by reducing fees and speeding up fire plans reviews. The Board approved reducing select fees related to plans reviews and development by five to six percent while also approving a new fire plans reviews section within the division.

With development speed tied to new jobs in the area, fire plans reviews had in some cases delayed projects prompting discussions with fire districts about their impact on economic development. Commissioner Tom Henning, District 3, led discussions with the Golden Gate, East Naples and North Naples Fire Commissioners focused on improving fire plans reviews and moving the responsibility under the County.

"Jobs must make it to the market faster, and businesses must know we are business friendly. This change is a first step to positively impacting this County’s growth," Commissioner Tom Henning, District 3.

At Tuesday’s BCC meeting, Commissioners approved hiring County fire plans reviewers to assume control over reviews for East Naples, Golden Gate, Isles of Capri, Ochopee and Collier Fire District One. Additionally, the Board approved a $55,000 turn-key office lease with North Naples Fire Control and Rescue District (NNFD) which has decided to assume control of its own fire plans reviews and embed its reviews with the County’s fire plans review section. NNFD and County plans reviewers will use the same planning software to increase coordination and maximize cooperation.

The Fire Code Official’s Office uses software that cannot communicate with the County’s planning platform sometimes causing delays. There are some remaining, collective members of the Fire Code Official’s Office, and they must decide the future of their fire plans reviews prior to the office dissolving.

Although County fire plans reviewers work directly for the County, the East Naples-Golden Gate Fire Marshal will remain the Authority with Jurisdiction over final fire plans review approvals. The East Naples-Golden Gate Fire Chief, North Naples Fire Chief and Growth Management Division Administrator have committed to work together.

"Our Commission agreed to this change in order to create a positive working relationship between fire districts and the County and developers," said East Naples Fire Control and Rescue District Commissioner Jeff Page.

Until the County and NNFD hire and train staff, Fire Code Office staff will continue to process fire plans reviews for all fire districts. NNFD has set its fire plans review launch for June 2, 2014. The County is currently in the process of hiring the appropriate staff and the positions will remain open until filled. Interested applicants may apply at http://goo.gl/qHrvwD.

Collier County Veteran Services and Domestic Animal Services (DAS) are teaming up to support veterans and give shelter pets a second chance with the creation of Operation Welcome Home: Shelter Pets for Vets. The program is dedicated to supporting veterans and providing a second chance for shelter pets by rescuing, training and pairing them with America’s veterans who could benefit from a companion animal at no cost. Medical studies have shown that companion animals significantly improve mental and physical health, including reducing stress, depression and anxiety; symptoms experienced by many who have served in the military.

DAS Volunteer and "The Pitbull Crew Inc." Founder Jeanette Jolly has spearheaded the creation of the Collier County Operation Welcome Home: Shelter Pets for Vets. "As the child of a veteran, this program hits really close to home for me," said Jolly. "As a nation, we are indebted to the brave men and women who serve our country. The Marco planning board has asked staff to recalculate parking needed at the Marriott hotel by using what is required by code rather than requested in a PUD. The board felt conditions in the PUD required removal of landscape materials and should be discussed further and a mitigation program for lost vegetation should be included in any amendment. Members agreed an increase over the already permitted 100 feet might not be the reason to approve or disapprove an amendment. The Marriott is requesting 125 feet for its eastside tower excluding the elevator shaft and architectural ornamentation. Staff will compile information concerning the raised tennis courts, parking lot lights, construction noise and staging, street damage during construction, street crossing safety features, and public beach parking. .
